Priority of SCG Citizenship Projects Relevant to Stakeholders and Communities

SCG is committed to “Concern for Social Responsibility” and conducts the business with sustainability and responsibility by minimizing environmental impacts, building sustainable communities through SCG’s innovation expertise, as well as engaging with communities to ensure long-term community resilience. Our priorities of corporate citizenship are Climate Actions to mitigate the adverse effects of global warming, Circular Economy to reduce global challenges of waste problems and resource scarcity by addressing these problems and solving them via the SCG Circular Way guideline, as well as Make-Use-Return, and Good Health and Well-being especially the COVID-19 pandemic to exert expertise in a collaboration with doctors to develop a series of Covid-19 innovations to fulfill their needs in order to reduce infection risks among frontline healthcare workers and assist Thailand in overcoming this pandemic crisis. We also integrate the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into social responsibility and opportunities by conducting better business and creating sustainable future to society and the planet, together with the implementation of all aspects under good supervision in accordance with the principles of corporate governance.

Better Quality of Life

Climate Actions

Creating resilience to climate change impacts, SCG puts priority on projects that support the rehabilitation of nature, capacity building of community and creating well-being to enhance natural fertility, good quality of life, and economic growth.

Global warming and climate change are urgent issues that require the reduction of GHG emissions following the Paris agreement and SDGs 7,9,12,13 and 15.  SCG continuously pays attention and creates share value along its value chain by committing to reducing GHGs and becoming a Net Zero by 2050 to attain the increase in global average temperature to below 1.5˚C.  To reach this goal, Green Construction, one of the waste-to-wealth projects, exploits digital technologies e.g., Building Information Modeling (BIM) and 3D printing to push construction innovation to fulfill unmet needs of customers in Thailand’s construction sector. It solves the problem of inefficient construction, outdated technology and environmental impacts.  Zero Burn is another project aiming to increase biomass to replace fossil fuel by promoting agricultural waste purchasing points around cement plants.  Communities have been able to generate more income from turning agricultural wastes into renewable energy sources while mitigating PM2.5 pollution and changing traditional practices from crop residue burning. Moreover, SCG has continuously succeeded in the reforestation program by constructing check dams with local materials such as rocks, gravels and tree branches. They not only gradually nourish degraded forests to have enough water for trees and other plants, but also collectively slow down the flow of water to mitigate flooding during the rainy season, as well as being served as wet firebreaks to protect and control wildfires during summer.

Circular Economy

Due to the global challenge of the impacts from waste problems and resource scarcity, SCG places importance on adoption of circular economy as one of our core strategies in sustainable development as well as one of our priorities in carrying out social activities to achieve sustainable development goals regarding responsible production and consumption.

Waste crisis has caused tremendous impacts and aggravated global resource scarcity. SCG strives to promote a systematic waste management align with SDGs 8, 9 & 12 that we continuously pay attention and create share value along its value chain by encouraging changes in production and consumption behaviors according to SCG circular way as a viable and sustainable approach into tangible impacts. We strengthen Circular Economy with digital platforms e.g. PaperX, KoomKah into business by returning and recycling wastes to be raw materials for SCG’s operations. SCG’s Bang Sue Model extracts lessons learned and scales up to other communities, starting with areas around the factories. Ban Pong Model, one of the communities around SCGP, has been expanded and successful in driving the Zero Waste Community. In due time, both have been expanded to SCG’s key stakeholders to spur positive change toward proper waste management nationwide and inspire them to action for sustainable future on SD symposium 2020.

Good Health and Well-being

SCG puts an effort into placing priority on playing an active part in tackling social problems that impact livelihood and the quality of life, enhancing good health and well-being, economic strength, and reducing social inequality.  SCG believes that being healthy and living in a safe environment reflect the good quality of life which is an important foundation of sustainable development.

Good Health and well-being are vital priorities align with SDGs3 and 8 that SCG continuously pays attention and creates share value along its value chain. With the COVID-19 pandemic, SCG recognizes the urgency of multi-sectoral collaboration to facing the crisis by developing innovative products to fight the pandemic, provides medical care for frontline medical staff domestically and regionally. The situation has affected the economy causing unemployment and SCG has initiated career development and helped people affected by the crisis to earn a living to sustain and support themselves, e.g. Professional Builder Institute & Living Solution Expert Projects to offer an opportunity to develop their new technical skills. Moreover, Transportation Safety has continuously implemented and put an effort to manage by embedding safety mindsets, as well as building driving skills and capability among employees, drivers in the value chain, and people in communities to ensure that they all share public route with maximum safety.
