CSR – Climate Resilience

Creating resilience to climate change impacts. SCG puts a priority on projects that support the rehabilitation of nature, capacity building of community, and creating well-being to enhance natural fertility, good quality of life, and economic growth.

Global warming and climate change are urgent and required in reducing GHG emissions following the Paris agreement and SDGs 7, 9, 12 and 13 that SCG continuously pays attention to and creates share value along its value chain by committing to reduce GHG and become a Net Zero by 2050 to attain the increase in global average temperature to below 1.5˚C. To reach this goal, Promoting Energy-Efficient Technology by Boosting Energy Efficiency through Automation of its measuring and control system, resulting in higher process optimization and energy efficiency. Scaling up Solar Energy and also Biomass that generates income to farmers who previously disposed of farm waste by open burning which emitted greenhouse gas and harmful PM2.5 together with Indoor Air Pollution Treatment System also helps to cut CO2 of emissions. Moreover, SCG has continuously implemented Plant the Trees to Beat the Heat and Constructing check dams to restore the ecology and reduce global warming.

Promoting Energy-Efficient Technology

Climate resilience is a prominent global issue this past year, resulting in law enforcement risk and opportunities toward a low carbon economy. SCG sets Net Zero target in 2050 and its science-based targets initiative is under validation process while continuing to implement the strategies and measures towards achieving Net Zero target. Chemicals Business applies digital technology to automate its measuring and control system, resulting in higher efficiency of the production at its Rayong Olefins plant. Likewise, SCGP (Packaging Business) applies digitalization and automation of equipment and machinery in paper production at Siam Kraft Industry’s factory, aiming at process optimization and energy efficiency. Solar Energy and Biomass in Cement-Building Materials Business has scaled up rooftop solar energy generation internally and externally, bringing total installed capacity to 18,923 megawatt-hours per year. RIL 1996 Company Limited, Chemicals Business also scaled up its solar energy operation by providing rooftop solar solutions to the office and factory rooftop space of five companies located in Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate namely: Thai Polyethylene Company Limited, Map Ta Phut Olefins Company Limited, Grand Siam Composite Company Limited, Thai MFC Company Limited and Map Ta Phut Tank Terminal Company Limited. Altogether the installed capacity is up to 1.78 megawatts of outputs to supply electricity demand inside the building. SCGP (Packaging Business) has expanded its solar energy capacity to 11.78 megawatts. It also boosts biomass utilization through a sugarcane leaf buying scheme from farmers to meet the increasing demands of machinery that have been improved to use the biomass.

Plant the Trees to Beat the Heat

SCG is relentless in raising awareness among young people to grow trees as a means to mitigate global warming. This runs concurrently with continuously supporting all SCG business units to carry out tree planting activities in cooperation with communities in numerous areas throughout Thailand. The emphasis is on fostering knowledge and understanding about tree planting to grow both land and sea forests to help absorb carbon dioxide.

Constructing Check Dams to Restore Ecological Balance

SCG has adopted His Majesty the Late King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s sustainable water management approach in its operations for more than 10 years and has continued, preserved, and built upon the royal legacy on “Water is life” through the “Conserving Water from Mountain to Mighty River” project.

The initiative aims to empower the community to solve drought and flooding problems by engaging the community in the process, allowing the locals to fully understand water management in their areas. The construction of check dams in the once arid land helps retain moisture in watershed forests and restore ecological balance.  It also helps local communities solve the drought in summer and the flooding in raining seasons, as well as storing water for consumption and agriculture by navigating water down to connected ponds in the foothills or distributing water on lowland through the ‘Monkey Cheek’ water retention system to allow farmers to fully utilize water for agriculture.
